Betting in South Africa: key facts
| Minimum age | 18 |
|---|---|
| Regulator | Land-based casinos in South Africa are licensed by the nine provincial gambling authorities. The National Gambling Board oversees the system nationally but does not issue operating licences itself. Fourways falls inside Gauteng, so the provincial authority for this venue is the Gauteng Gambling Board. |
Online, only sports and horse-racing betting with a bookmaker licensed by a provincial gambling board is lawful in South Africa; interactive online casino games are not licensed here. A physical casino floor is a separate and fully licensed setting, which is why everything on this site describes a visit to Montecasino Boulevard rather than an internet account.
Working out the evening before you set off
- Fix the destination first: Montecasino Boulevard, Fourways 2055, where William Nicol Drive meets Witkoppen Road. Sandton lies roughly 15 km back, Lanseria about 20 km west and OR Tambo nearer 45 km across the city, so the drive is the part worth planning.
- Decide what you are coming for. A cabinet session can start at any hour on a floor that never closes; a table needs 07:00 or later; a performance at the 1,870-capacity Teatro or the 400-seat Pieter Toerien Theatre is a fixed appointment.
- Carry proof of age. Eighteen is the legal floor for gaming in South Africa, and a green ID book, smart ID card, driving licence or passport is what satisfies it at the entrance and again at the counter.
- Settle the money question in the car park, where R20 buys an undercover bay unless a higher rewards tier covers it. Draw one amount for the night and let that be the whole budget.
- Allow time for the village itself. Four hotels, the Bird Gardens, dozens of restaurants and a long shopping street sit between the parking levels and the gaming entrance, and most visitors underestimate the walk.
What the complex actually is
Montecasino opened in November 2000 as a Tuscan hill village rebuilt indoors: cobbled lanes, shuttered facades and a painted ceiling permanently fixed at dusk. The gaming floor occupies one quarter of that world, and a great many people spend an evening here without ever seeing a cabinet.
- Around the clock — the main floor, the Salon Prive and the cash desk are listed as running 24 hours, with the tables opening at 07:00. Arrival time is rarely the constraint in Fourways; traffic on William Nicol Drive usually is.
- Mixed audience — theatre crowds, families heading for the Bird Gardens and hotel guests share the same lanes, which is why smart casual is the sensible default and beachwear is not.
- Rand only — cabinets swallow notes and print a ticket on cash-out, tables trade cash for chips, and the counter converts between all of them at any hour.
- Confirm the specifics — this is an independent guide. Show times, room rates and whatever draw is running belong on the venue's own website, and that is where to check them.
